Verwendete Materialien

The materials

The predominant materials are bio-composites from renewable resources. Very little research has been done on these material combinations so far, because they have not been used before. Therefore, many material tests were necessary to create a favourable basis fort he production process. We also had to develop methods and procedures for producing composites that could live up to the later challenge. On the one hand there had been tests to manufacture sandwich plates, where we used balsa wood as centre layer, different kinds of silk as fabric as well as biological resins, epoxy resins and bone glue.

On the other hand, there were tests with a pre-manufactured biological plate material, the so called PLA. To be able to realise the lightweight construction we tried different ways to produce sandwich pipes. Among others, foam core pipes as well as pipes from wound and laminated strips of balsa wood had been made. With all construction principles we tested different resins and different types of silk.

The frame is mainly built from spans. Because of the seat’s and framework’s enclosed structure, moments of torsion are very well absorbed which strengthens the entire frame. A high measure of stability and at the same time a very low weight is realized with the innovative production of the framework. The rollbar’s pipes are made from a high-performance balsa-silk-laminate. The used plate materials are manufactured as sandwich composites.

The exterior consists of a multi-layer silk laminate. The vehicle’s special look has been willingly chosen and is a product of the use of silk. It follows the eco-theme and creates the unique appearance of „zero8“.
